James L. Barton was born near Geneva, N.Y.; he came to Lewiston with his father in 1807. Engaged in the forwarding business from Lewiston to Buffalo; moved to Buffalo in 1832, where he formed a partnership with Samuel Wilkeson. Born in Moreau, Saratoga County, N.Y., 28 Oct. 1812; graduated from Union College in 1833. Came to Buffalo in 1833, where he taught school, practiced law, and served as superintendent of schools in 1844, 1846, and 1847.
